ABSTRACT

In addition, the finding that crocin specifically prevents ethanol-induced memory impairment and inhibition of hippocampal LTP is of great significance in the following respects. First, the consistency of effects of crocin on learning behavior and LTP further supports the hypothesis that hippocampal LTP is involved in memory formation. Second, crocin should be useful as a new pharmacological tool for studying the mechanism of ethanol-induced memory impairment. Further investigation on molecular target(s) of crocin may give new insight into the mechanism underlying memory formation and LTP (Abe and Saito, 2000).
