ABSTRACT

Initially, it was thought that macrophages could not produce light, but using luminol we and others

showed that macrophages can produce luminol-dependent chemiluminescence (LDCL). Macrophages produce much less light in the unstimulated state than do neutrophils (~l/100). ln fact, macrophages produce light without the addition of luminol as do neutrophils, but without luminol it takes many more cells to observe CL.
