Spontaneous hybridization is known to occur between conventional crops and their wild relatives, and the introgression of crop genes into populations of related wild plants has been demonstrated for several crop-wild pairs. While introgression is the variable of
evolutionary and ecological importance, hybridization is one measure of the potential for introgression to occur.
