ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews known cardiovascular effects of environmental tobacco smoke exposure on children and adolescents, as well as young adults. Though it can easily be postulated based on the relevant literature that adverse effects occur, it has not yet been demonstrated that past smoke exposure in childhood produces cardiovascular morbidity in adulthood. It seems likely that passive smoke exposure is synergistic with other known risk factors for coronary artery disease risk. Further studies are needed to determine if passive smoke exposure is related to vascular disease in childhood.
