ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the seismic performance and design of port structures. Typical port structures are shown in Figure 27.1. Port structures have sustained major to catastrophic damage in a number of earthquakes during the past few decades. This damage is not only costly in itself, but represents a major impact on the regional economy, for which the port is the “doorway.” Figures 27.2 to 27.8 illustrate port damage from earthquakes in Chile and Japan, for example.
