ABSTRACT

The primary impact of concern with regard to earthquakes is life safety. Historically, most earthquake engineering research and development efforts have been focused on ground motion, modeling of structural vulnerability, and aseismic design. However, the repeated large loss of human life in earthquakes

has sparked renewed interest in the areas of

casualty

, or

mortality and morbidity

estimation. The results from these models provide engineers and government officials with estimates useful in all phases of disaster management, including planning and preparedness, emergency response, recovery, and mitigation.
