ABSTRACT

Only engineering models that directly predict ground-motion amplitude or that predict the modulation of this amplitude from such effects as fault geometry and source directivity are discussed in this chapter. Duration is an important aspect of strong ground motion, especially for the inelastic response

of structures, but much less attention has been paid to predicting duration and, therefore, no consensus engineering models are available. Generally speaking, the inelastic behavior of structures is included in structural design through the use of time histories and structural ductility factors, which are the topics of other chapters in this book.
