Up to this point, when sampling has been discussed, the sampling units have been made up of single elements of the universe of interest. In some cases, however, it is advantageous to use sampling units that contain one or more elements or may even be empty. Such sampling units are known as

clusters,

and when they are used the sampling process is known as

cluster sampling
