ABSTRACT

Ion exchange chromatography (IEC) has been in use for over half a century.

The first high performance applications are substantially more recent;

however, IEC tends to be less dependent on particle size and column packing technique than reversed phase liquid chromatography. There is, therefore, value in reviewing some of the older separations, many of which are remarkable in light of the simplicity of the technology. Advances in separation speed, minimum sample size, and detection have been astonishing.
