ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, we introduced the use of subscripts in variable notation to make the model more mathematically compact. In this chapter, we introduce the use of the summation sign when expressing a number of variables together and the use of the subset sign to separate certain variables, which should make the model even more compact specifically when we are dealing with large-scale modelling. We also present a number of well-known problems frequently mentioned in the literature and that have arisen in practice. A number of practical applications of these problems are briefly discussed with reference to the literature.
