ABSTRACT

Invasive species are nonnative species that are capable of establishing and spreading in disturbed habitats or natural communities. Weeds are one category of invasive species, as are invasive microorganisms that act as pathogens as well as invasive insect pests. In contrast, many beneficial exotic species in China that are introduced and maintained by humans are not considered invasive species. Herein, the term invasive pest refers to a species that is introduced, either naturally or by humans intentionally or unintentionally, into a new habitat where it becomes established and causes damage to the natural ecosystem, native species, and even human health. Invasion by exotic pests is becoming a problem of greater concern in China as the global economy becomes increasingly integrated and international trade continues to grow.
