ABSTRACT

Dispensable amino acids, also called nonessential amino acids, can be synthesized by the body from other amino acids. The eight amino acids mentioned in Table 9.1 can be considered to be nonessential in humans, based on the body’s ability to synthesize them from other amino acids under almost all conditions. Although, as discussed in other chapters, there is likely no amino acid which is nonessential since limiting amounts of the precursors of these amino acids in a diet that does not contain adequate amounts of these amino acids will limit the body’s ability to synthesize them.
