ABSTRACT

Adsorption has been defined as the phenomenon that occurs when concentration of a component in an interfacial layer of vapor-solid, vapor-liquid, liquid-solid, or liquid-liquid becomes higher or lower than that of the bulk phase. The former case is called a positive adsorption and the latter a negative adsorption. The adsorption phenomenon should be distinguished from absorption, where adsorbate molecules penetrate the interior of a solid. In this section the interactions between vapors and solids, or between liquids and solids, are described. Vapor-solid systems are dealt with in detail.
