ABSTRACT

The first phase of a DFSS project is similar to the first phase of DMAIC. As was true of the Definition phase of DMAIC, the Identification phase has as its goal understanding the problem to be solved, or, in DFSS terminology, the opportunity to be addressed. Many of the steps are the same as those outlined in Chapter 5. In some cases, there is a slightly different focus, and new tools are employed. These differences are caused by the fact that instead of improving the existing process, the goal of DFSS is to create a new one that both meets the customers’ requirements and is capable of producing defect-free products.
