ABSTRACT

Especially in busy offices, which tend to be located in highly populated areas where large numbers of deaths occur, the medical examiners or coroners cannot conduct all aspects of their investigations by themselves. The coroner or medical examiner may rely on a

death investigator

to assist with the death investigation. The qualifications of these people vary tremendously with the geographic location. There are no standard training or educational requirements for death investigators overall. However, the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI), founded in the late 1990s, has developed a standard training curriculum and examination program to become a registered or certified death investigator. A number of death investigation offices now require their investigators to be ABMDI registered or certified.
