Many deaths result in legal proceedings but do not involve a crime. When someone may be responsible (culpable), in whole or in part, for the death of another person through some act of commission (something that was done) or omission (something that was
not
done), there is often a
civil law
proceeding (lawsuit) filed
or her head, fractured the skull, and died. No crime was committed, but the bank might be held liable (culpable) for not providing a safe environment for customers. Medical examiners and coroners often get involved in such cases because many cases, like this one, involve an injury, which usually qualifies the death for medicolegal death investigation by the medical examiner or coroner.
