ABSTRACT

In the last couple of years LA has experienced significant scientific and general interest as an anti-aging medicine (Hagen et al., 2002; Liu et al., 2002a,b) and as a fat-reducing compound (Kim et al., 2004; Shen et al., 2005). Decades before this recent interest, LA has been approved as a drug against diabetic polyneuropathy in Germany (Ziegler et al., 2004). In this context LA has been described to act mainly as an antioxidant. The antioxidative potential of LA has also been proposed as the responsible mechanism of action in LA’s protective

action in mushroom poisoning and protection from CCl4-induced liver damage (Bustamante et al., 1998).
