ABSTRACT

A lot of research and development has been undertaken on managing multimedia databases [1, 2]. More recently, tools are being developed to mine multimedia databases. However, many of these tools essentially extract concepts from the multimedia data and subsequently mine the concepts to extract patterns. Much of the focus of the data mining tools for mining unstructured data includes mining the text in reports, classifying images, analyzing video to determine suspicious events and to mine the image and geospatial databases to detect unusual patterns. In this part of the book, we will describe one such tool we have developed on image mining. We will classify images as well as automatically annotate images. The details of our tool will be described in Chapters 13 to 16. In this chapter, we will describe the broader area of managing and mining multimedia databases.
