ABSTRACT

Introduction In June 2003, Wal-Mart asked its top 100 suppliers to place RFID (radio frequency identification) tags on pallets and cases with a deadline of January 2005. Then, in August 2003, Wal-Mart extended this requirement, issuing a mandate requiring all suppliers to put RFID tags on pallets and cases by December 2006. The Wal-Mart supplier community responded to this expensive new requirement with shock, disbelief, and anger.1
