ABSTRACT

Introduction The limitations of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in its application to supply chains are creating a “value barrier” between RFID costs and the associated RFID benefits. As a result of the limited functionality (IDs only), high cost of deployment of readers, and lack of enterprise systems to take advantage of the technology, few product suppliers and transport providers share in the benefits that some retailers are seeing. The placement of sensors into active RFID tags is a good first step to address these limitations and starts to break down this value barrier, at least for some participants.
