ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will expand our knowledge of communications based upon the foundation presented in the previous chapter. We will describe and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of cellular, Bluetooth, WiFi, and satellite transmission systems with respect to their actual and potential uses in vehicles. Once this is accomplished, we will examine ad hoc networking and discuss how data can be routed between vehicles via an ad hoc network. To accomplish this, we will discuss the emerging IEEE 802.11s standard as a precursor to discussing mobile ad hoc networking, which is referred to as MANET.
