ABSTRACT
From about the time of John Gerard, the majority of trade between India and England was controlled by the East India Company, established in 1600 to challenge the monopoly of the Portugese and the Dutch. The eventual scale of the Company’s operations was enormous. By 1800, it was employing no fewer than twelve million people in producing and collecting goods for Western markets.
