ABSTRACT
Although the title of this chapter may seem somewhat vague and ominous, the focus is on the forms of punishment that receive minimal attention in typical discussions of punitive sanctions but are oftentimes widely applied and especially consequential to offenders. Monetary punishments, in particular fines and forfeitures, are used regularly and represent some of the oldest yet newest forms of punishment administered by the criminal justice system. Other topics discussed in this chapter include some nontraditional punitive sanctions, namely: “Registration and Nonprison Restrictions on Liberty,” “Driver-and Vehicle-Based Sanctions,” “Disenfranchisement and Other Civil Rights Restrictions,” “Shaming: Modern Day Branding or Community Reintegration?” “Medical Castration,” and “Civil Commitment” of sex offenders.
