ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 illustrated traditional introductory approaches to friction, and Chapter 3 described a variety of methods that were developed to measure friction coef cients. This chapter begins with a hypothetical experiment to illustrate increasing levels of complexity when one attempts to understand the fundamental basis for friction. It lays the groundwork for understanding the role of scale effects and why it is important to de ne the tribosystem before selecting a friction model. Section 4.2 discusses static friction and stick-slip and also the circumstances under which a relationship between adhesion and friction is established. Section 4.3 describes the basic concepts of sliding friction, and Section 4.4 addresses frictional heating.
