ABSTRACT

The confusion over which friction data to use when designing machinery exists to this day. Since friction is a characteristic of both the materials and the tribosystem, the extent to which the properties of materials affect friction coef cients depends on a range of variables. One cannot state with certainty that the kinetic friction coef cient for Type 52100 bearing steel against 70-30 brass is always exactly 0.830. Therefore, although this chapter exempli es the frictional characteristics of a number of different materials, it is not possible to span the entire range of situations in which such materials might come into contact. As a result, the graphs and tables of data presented here are intended for illustrative purposes, given the stated testing conditions.
