ABSTRACT

First, it is necessary to establish what an average and range control chart looks like. An example appears in Figure 13.1. It is a chart of data from a medical devices plant assembling automatic injectors. Alignment problems had been experienced in the plant’s high-speed assembly machines, leading to variable pressure required to activate the device and interruptions to the process to adjust the alignment and assembly of the components. This, in turn, led to reduced production capacity. The variable under examination is the alignment of a critical component.
