In order to illustrate his theory, Shewhart conducted extensive experiments using numbered chips that represented three different shapes of distributions. In each of three bowls, he placed wooden chips whose marked values formed a normal, triangular, and rectangular distribution, respectively. Figure 14.1 shows the authors’ simplified distributions. Shewhart used distributions with 61 classes.
