ABSTRACT

What information do statistics such as average, standard deviation, skewness, or kurtosis mean? Sometimes they mean very little. This will be the case whenever instability is found.

By definition, if the process is unstable, it is unpredictable and therefore has no known capability. The calculations can be done, and resultants will be forthcoming, but they mean very little. The standard deviation of an unstable process will alter depending on how many special causes or shifts in the process mean are included in the data set. It is a matter of luck.
