ABSTRACT

On June 1, 1992, Newsweek blazoned headlines: “No More Hot Air, It’s Time to Talk Sense About the Environment.”1 The article described the meeting of world leaders in Rio the following week. Their mission: “To save the ship from its passengers.” The feature article was titled “The Future Is Here” and emphasized that Antarctica suffers an ozone hole; North America takes the lion’s share of world’s resources; South America is custodian of the world’s largest rain forest; Australia is overcultivated; Africa faces population density doubling; and Asia has stressed resources.
