ABSTRACT

As explained in Chapter 1, the characteristics of EM fields and their interaction with objects are a strong function of the ratio of the wavelength of the EM fields to object size. The purpose of the present chapter is to describe and discuss the details of EM field behavior and their interactions when the wavelength is about the same size as the object. According to Figure 1.31, the free-space wavelength is 300 m when the frequency is 1 MHz, and is 0.3 mm when the frequency is 1 THz (1 × 1012 Hz). Consequently, the frequency range addressed in this chapter is approximately between these two frequencies; it is the range designated as microwave theory in Figure 1.31.
