Although AIDS accounts for most of the increase, deaths from all other infectious diseases rose a dramatic 22%.
These figures are even more extraordinary because the International Code of Diseases lists many infectious diseases in categories other than infectious. For example, meningitis and cirrhosis are classified as diseases of the nervous system and liver, respectively, and only 17% of deaths attributable to infections are actually included in the codes for parasitic and infectious diseases.
