ABSTRACT
In 1949, Claude Shannon published a paper entitled “Communication Theory of Secrecy Systems” in the Bell Systems Technical Journal. This paper had a great influence on the scientific study of cryptography. In this chapter, we discuss several of Shannon’s ideas. First, however, we consider some of the various approaches to evaluating the security of a cryptosystem. We define some of the most useful criteria now.
