ABSTRACT

The first point regarding speech cues of which the investigative interviewer needs to be keenly aware is that, in large part, verbal cues do not occur in a vacuum. What was the source of the stimulus that triggered the subject’s verbal reaction? The source may be the interviewer’s question or the interviewer’s behavior as observed by the subject. The subject might find that stimulus significant enough to make some form of verbal response. The form of verbal response in terms of voice quality indicates the strength of emotions the person is experiencing at the time of his verbal output (Skinner, 1952, 1992).
