ABSTRACT

An important aspect of mobile computing is not only to allow users access to information anywhere, anytime but also to give information that is relevant to the user’s context. In most cases, the user’s location is an important factor in determining the user’s context. For example, if I am in Seoul and I request for a list of restaurants, I would like to be presented with a list of restaurants near my vicinity, not a list of restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. For the system to deliver location-sensitive information, the system has to be able to detect my location and tailor the information delivered to me to meet my needs. This chapter discusses techniques to determine a user’s location and how it is used in location-aware applications.
