ABSTRACT

Vehicle design, features, and technology are constantly changing. One obvious way to maintain safe mobility in an aging society is to design vehicles and technology that accommodate the age-related changes in functional abilities that tend to be experienced by older adults. Such design changes could help older adults perform critical driving skills that have become difficult for them, while also making the driving task easier for all drivers. In this chapter, we first review the issues surrounding the design of vehicles for older adults. We then discuss how existing vehicles can be modified to help older adults continue to drive safely. We conclude the chapter by discussing new or near-term technologies that have promise for enhancing older driver safety and mobility.
