ABSTRACT

Maximizing the cooperative diversity (CD) energy gain in wireless cellular networks requires joint efforts from several layers of the layered communication model. Based on the physical layer CD scheme used, the optimal solution depends on the optimal power allocation strategy and the optimal matching of active users in a radio cell, aimed to enhance the performanceof not only a particular user but also the whole network. In this chapter, we study how to appropriately match users for two-user CD systems deploying an optimal power allocation strategy. Optimal power allocation solutions, which can minimize the total energy consumptions for the cooperating pair, are derived. We further study the location of the optimal partner for a user and develop a novel matching algorithm with performancevery close to the optimalmaximum-weighted (MW)matching algorithm, but withmuch lower computational complexity.
