ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews first the main ideas that motivate and serve as background for the research field of cooperative automatic repeat request (C-ARQ) protocols. It revisits some of the classical results on ARQ protocols, such as basic throughput versus reliability trade-offs, and reviews well-known concepts such as hybrid ARQ (H-ARQ) type I and II or packet combining methods. Regarding the cooperative networking field, its historical development is also reviewed, from the classical relay channel and the cooperative diversity channels to the more recent proposals.
