ABSTRACT

Sometimes it is important to learn about a deformed pattern and stress distribution in the vicinity of a suddenly applied force, just after that force is applied. This takes us to the topic of wave propagation. An elastic axial bar, in a small deection regime and within the elastic range of stress, as considered below, is the best introduction to the subject. Other elements, relatively easy to describe, are quantied as well. The analysis involving a linear material is followed by an investigation of the same phenomena using a simple, bilinear material model. Also, the subjects of body waves and pulse transmission are outlined.
