ABSTRACT

Fluid balance is of importance to the middle-aged population-as it is to populations of all age groups. In the United States, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2005 published official recommendations for water/hydration needs. This official recommendation is a new step within the paradigm of Recommended Dietary Allowances, as prior to 2004, the IOM stated that it was impossible to set a water recommendation.1 Water is the largest constituent of the human body, accounting for around 60% of the weight of the human body. Water is essential for cellular homeostasis, playing important roles in both physiological and biochemical functions. Many factors impact daily hydration needs as well as our ability to hydrate.
