Five classes of drugs are used today to treat people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection including nucleoside and nucleotide analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), protease inhibitors (PIs), entry and fusion inhibitors, and integrase inhibitors [1-3]. Three or more antiretroviral medications are administered concomitantly as antiretroviral treatment (ART). ART is designed to provide durable virologic suppression with immunologic recovery while preventing and minimizing toxicities and resistance [1].
