ABSTRACT

The process of wound healing is complex. Like any construction project, wound healing requires adequate blood ow as a supply line, and nutrients as the building blocks of the reparative process. The general health status of the patient can also inuence the outcome of the healing process as it may alter the ability of the individual to respond to the injury and redistribute the ingested nutrients. Wound repair depends upon sufficient ingestion, absorption, and metabolic distribution of macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat) and micronutrients (vitamins and trace elements). Imbalance due to inadequate supply or excessive demand may lead to an inability to heal wounds. While small wounds mend in healthy people without special attention, the metabolic demands of large wounds may outstrip the resources of even the well-nourished patient, making wound care most challenging.
