ABSTRACT

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2004 put forth official recommendations as to hydration needs. This official recommendation is a new step within the paradigm of Recommended Daily Intake/Allowance, as prior to 2004, the IOM stated that it was impossible to set a water recommendation.1 Water is the largest constituent of the human body, accounting for more than 60%. Water is essential for cellular homeostasis, playing important roles in physiological and biochemical functions. Many factors impact daily hydration needs as well as our ability to hydrate.
