ABSTRACT
There are many less banal possibilities than sticking square tiles together. They were explored and exploited by the early Muslim culture that left such masterpieces as the Alhambra for us to admire. Today’s mathematicians study a vast range of tiling patterns that echo that preoccupation with regularly repeating patterns.1 Such a pursuit can be extended to three dimensions, although its applications are less familiar.
