The primary historical importance of the debate on the origins of the Causeway lies in it being a focus of the intellectual battle between the Neptunists and the Vulcanists in the eighteenth century. The history of geology delights in giving such titles to its warring sects: others have been classed as Plutonists, Catastrophists, and Uniformitarians.
