ABSTRACT

Much can be learned about accidents that can be applied to a deeper understanding of human responses to accident situations and how they may occur in various industries. Lessons can also be learned from the study of operators’ responses to simulated accidents. Some people feel that because simulated accidents are not real, they do not correspond to all of the pressures on the operators and should therefore not be used. But simulated accidents offer a number of benefits, including the fact that one can observe the operators and their actions under a variety of conditions without waiting, possibly for years, for a real accident to occur. Simulated accidents are addressed later in the book.
