ABSTRACT
While many people are familiar with the technological advances introduced in the last several decades, such as advanced microprocessors, laser eye surgery, highresolution imaging, and deep-space exploration, it may be surprising to many that effective vibration control played an integral part in these advances. As technology advances toward smaller features, higher resolutions, more precise targeting, and more efficient use of materials, effective vibration control will become a critical component of success. In this chapter, I provide an overview of the sources of vibration and the key terms and technologies that are used to quantify and solve vibration problems. I also provide a more detailed review of the vibration problems and solutions for laser researchers. Finally, I conclude with some helpful hints and safety tips that are essential for all laser researchers.
