ABSTRACT

Many types of climates have been used for delineating the climate of Indonesia. The names equatorial and tropical climates have been assigned to characterize the prevailing climate in the archipelago, and the two terms have been applied synonymously by many scientists for reasons explained below. Another type of climate

applied to often characterize the climate in Indonesia is the monsoon climate, and the Indonesian people commonly relate the west monsoon with the rainy season and the east monsoon with the dry season. This may be true for certain parts but is not necessarily correct for other parts of the archipelago. To alleviate some of the confusion, it is perhaps of importance to dene the three types of climates and discuss to which parts of Indonesia they can be applied.
