ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses river basin planning and management models and their integration with GIS. River basin models include those that simulate and optimize the operation of reservoirs and associated facilities to serve multiple purposes. River basin models and supportive GIS databases include representations for surface-water and groundwater hydrology to varying levels of sophistication. Many of these topics are addressed in other chapters. This chapter emphasizes the purposes and structures of GIS-based river basin models and their application as spatial decision-support systems.
