ABSTRACT

In this digital age, manuals seem a bit old-fashioned. Yet technical writing is a thriving and even growing occupation. Many technical writers are engaged in producing product manuals-and not a few of them have guided the creation of this book. They have generously shared their favorite tricks of the trade and have kept asking questions that needed answers. As the field of technical writing has grown and matured as a discipline in its own right, academic research in technical communication and human factors has kept pace. The fruits of that research are beginning to provide helpful answers to technical writers’ questions about how best to make a manual.
