ABSTRACT

In the automobile industry, chemists and chemical engineers are often employed in heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) departments due to their unique knowledge of such subjects as heat transfer, chemical behavior of refrigerants, chemical interactions between oils and other compounds, and the materials used in an HVAC module. In this chapter I would like to describe briefly an HVAC system so that we can understand the importance of the chemical knowledge around it. However, this is not intended as a detailed account on the subject. We will also discuss refrigerants and the importance of the chemistry of their design.
